Writing & Becoming An Overnight Success

cropped-showcase4.jpg

Writing & Money

Don’t think you will get rich off writing your first book. No matter what you have been reading, the odds are:

3 out of 10,00, and that is in Children’s books alone.

Is there hope, always. Harry Potter was no overnight series. The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings also weren’t either. Hard work and not giving up matter the most. Most famous authors except for a rare few, have not had overnight success, it just may seem that way from another writer’s view. Most readers also, don’t grasp the odds of an overnight success.

I only wrote this short blog, because of all the books saying you can become a writer, making a decent living writing books. I read a book on how to become a writer, even if you hate to write. Why would you want to write a book, if you hate to write? Writing should be more about passion, than money. Self-help books don’t really fall into overnight success either, and wouldn’t you want to write a self-help book on an issue dear to your heart. Yes, we all need and want to make money, but face it, not everyone is overnight.I see as I look at the ” Self Help ” selections for making easy money, that for some reason they are on the free list. { This observation is for Kindle ebooks. }

So when you read that book telling you how fast you can make the “big bucks” look into the real statistics. This can be applied to “courses” as well. Sure the person who makes the course makes money but does it really help you? Do your due diligence, before you buy.

Love all, Starr

Advisors, Be Afraid: Robots May Be Coming for Your Job

“Doomsday Preppers, ” an American reality series that ran on the National Geographic channel from 2011 to 2014, explored “…the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it. ” The movement continues today, with Silicon Valley technology executives among the latest participants in this survivalist world.

A more recent documentary, “Silicon Valley’s Doomsday: Prepping for An Economic Apocalypse, ” shows how tech preppers are readying themselves and their families to live out a technological apocalypse in style, complete with bunkers, off-grid homes, and guns. These executives are spending anywhere from $200K-400K on the low end to millions on the high end for so-called “billionaire bunkers. ”

Unlike the tin-foil-hat preppers of old who were concerned with a nuclear electromagnetic pulse, pandemic, supervolcanoes or other natural disasters, the tech preppers’ number one concern is social unrest. They fear that the automation they build to increase productivity is creating massive job loss that will destroy the very economy it created.

The documentary includes an interview with underground survival and bomb shelter manufacturer Ron Hubbard, who reports “business is booming. ” He states that most of the individuals who are part of the current prepper movement are professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, with a high concentration of tech executives. This is a mainstream phenomenon but is not discussed in the mainstream.

Advisors needed to spend less time on “repetitive” tasks and more on “advanced” ones, CEO Tim Buckley said.

Former tech executive Adam Taggert gave up his Silicon Valley lifestyle as a vice president for Yahoo to prepare for a new world he sees as inevitable. He sees the next 20 years as looking completely different from the last 20, with the greatest changes in the economy, energy systems, and the environment.

Today, Taggart’s business advises people on how to prepare for collapse. Many of his clients are among Silicon Valley’s wealthiest. Compared to prior preppers, these tech preppers are driven less by emotion and are more analytical. “The data is telling me this, therefore a prudent analytic person like myself should take these steps. ” With this group of preppers more like Spock and less like McCoy, what is it about the data that concerns them?

Name any job or profession, and there is likely a startup tech company working on how to automate it. Their vision of the future sees most humans not having sellable labor. With industry sector impact varied, the next logical question is, “What professions should be avoided because they are likely to be replaced by robots or software automation? ”

No More Accountants?

In his article in Fast Company, “Bet You Didn’t See This Coming: 10 Jobs That Will Be Replaced by Robots, ” Michael Grothaus shares the story of talking to a friend who had his own accounting firm. The friend said he would happily pay for his daughter’s college education, provided she wouldn’t pursue a degree in accounting.

This wasn’t the first time Grothaus heard a parent say they didn’t want their child to follow in their footsteps. A lawyer had recently told him the same thing. In both cases, it was because they felt that future job prospects in their fields were bleak due to one thing: automation.

Here are the jobs Grothaus thinks could be hit the hardest:

Insurance Underwriters and Claims Representatives – this is already happening in Japan

Bank Tellers and Representatives – the ATM of the future will replace tellers

Financial Analysts – financial analyst software is better at predicting market moves so this segment will be hit especially hard

Construction Workers – bricklayers, crane operators, bulldozer drivers will all be replaced by AI-controlled machines

Inventory Managers and Stockists – robots will save companies thousands and can be retrained with a simple software update

Farmers – robots will pick apples, weed cabbage, milk cows

Taxi Drivers – self-driving vehicles will be the norm

Manufacturing Workers – don’t believe politicians when they say they will bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. with these jobs currently disappearing in China. Foxconn, the maker of iPhones, recently replaced 60,000 workers with robots

Journalists – The Associated Press (AP) uses intelligence software (AI) to write quarterly earnings reports with 3,000 reports written by AI every quarter. Content sites of the future could exist without human writers at all.

Movie Stars – use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) techniques that can bring deceased actors to life will expand, with many actors, both living and deceased, acting in new projects through this technology

Automation Woes

In his opening remarks at the WBG/IMF 2017 spring meeting opening press conference, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim also sounded an alarm about automation. “Accelerations in technology are changing the landscape. We estimate two-thirds of all jobs that exist in developing countries will be wiped out by automation. ”

Advisors, Be Afraid: Robots May Be Coming for Your Job

Citing a U.S. government commission from the 1960s on the topic, McKinsey’s research summarized: “Technology destroys jobs, but not work. ” As an example, the research examined the effect of the personal computer in the United States since 1980, finding that the invention led to the creation of 18.5 million new jobs, even when accounting for jobs lost. The same might not be true for industrial robots, which destroy jobs overall, according to several reports.

For those of us in financial services, we already are experiencing robot-advisor options. Some wonder if Alexa will soon create our clients’ financial plans. An area rarely discussed in broker-dealer circles is what effect will we see in broker-dealer back-office-operations departments, compliance and other touch points for advisors.

In 10 years, will much of the broker-dealers’ back office be automated?

In his March 24, 2017, article in Fortune, “Robots Could Steal 40% of US Jobs by 2030,” author Aric Jenkins cites this vision of the future: “Nearly 40% of US jobs could soon be given to robots, according to a new report from Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). PwC researchers suggested that automated bots could take nearly 4 in 10 (38%) jobs in the U.S., 30% of jobs in the United Kingdom, 35% in Germany, and 21% in Japan. “

Advisors need to spend less time on “repetitive” tasks and more on “advanced” ones, CEO Tim Buckley says at the…

The report stated that while the United States and the United Kingdom, in particular, have similar economies, the wider U.S financial services sector is more vulnerable to automation. There was a silver lining in the report: More robots in the workplace could positively affect salaries. But these benefits may not be evenly spread across income groups, resulting in an increase in income inequality that would play into the tech executives’ social unrest concerns.

Opinions and statistics vary as to how large an impact automation will have on the employment market. My concern is this: If the executives who create this automation are so worried that they are preparing for massive civil unrest by prepping with shelters, food stocks and guns, lots of guns, perhaps these job loss estimates are too conservative.

What do they know that we don’t?

Pebble Mine has no place in Alaska’s Bristol Bay wilderness!

NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council)
DONATE
Help Stop Foreign Mining Company Investments in the Disastrous Pebble Mine

Take Action

Tell First Quantum’s CEO that the Pebble Mine has no place in Alaska’s Bristol Bay wilderness!

Take Action
Dear Roberta,

As you know, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt cut a backroom deal with Canadian company Northern Dynasty Minerals last year that brought the Pebble Mine — a toxic, gold and copper mega-mine — back from the dead.

But Pruitt’s deal did more than just resurrect the project: it opened the door for Northern Dynasty to secure the investors it desperately needs to move the project forward. And they might have just found one.

Another Canadian company — First Quantum Minerals — recently announced a $150 million investment stake in the Pebble Mine fiasco.

This is URGENT: if we want to kill the disastrous Pebble Mine, we must shut off the investor money IMMEDIATELY.

Tell First Quantum’s CEO that you oppose their investment in the toxic Pebble Mine and that they should walk away from this deal.

Alaska’s Bristol Bay is considered one of America’s last great wild places. This spectacular swath of rivers, lakes, wetlands, and tundra is home to brown bears, whales, majestic bald eagles, and Native communities that thrive off its world-renowned salmon fishery.

A pristine Bristol Bay is not only an environmental imperative — it’s also an economic lifeline for the region. The watershed supplies half the world’s sockeye salmon and the fishery supports 14,000 jobs and generates $1.5 billion annually. And it’s also a beloved tourism destination.

But all that is threatened by the Pebble Mine, which could produce up to 10 billion tons of mining waste that would have to be stored forever in the rivers, streams, and wildlands of Bristol Bay. The mine would require the construction of massive infrastructure including 83 miles of roads, a 230-megawatt power plant, and a 188-mile natural gas pipeline.

Tell First Quantum that the Pebble Mine has no place in Alaska’s Bristol Bay wilderness!

Not only is the Pebble Mine bad for communities, wildlife, and the environment — it’s also a bad investment.

So bad that some of First Quantum’s major shareholders, including the California State Treasurer and the New York State Comptroller, have openly demanded that the company sever all ties with the controversial project.

And it’s so bad that three of the world’s largest mining companies — Mitsubishi, Anglo American, and Rio Tinto — have already walked away from the project, even after investing hundreds of millions of dollars.

We must now convince First Quantum to walk away, too.

Tell First Quantum NOT to invest in the Pebble Mine.

When the EPA reopened the door to the Pebble Mine last year, NRDC activists like you drove more than 115,000 public comments to the agency in opposition to the mine. And your voices were heard.

Recently, Pruitt backtracked — a bit — on his pro-Pebble agenda by formally acknowledging the huge environmental threats posed by mining in Bristol Bay.

But to actually kill this project once and for all, we need hundreds of thousands of activists around the world to exhibit the same powerful show of force to convince First Quantum NOT to invest in the Pebble Mine.

Make your voice heard again today.

Thanks for standing with us during this critical time.

Sincerely,

Rhea Suh
President, NRDC

ARTICLE Four Hours Of Conflict: Israel, Iran & Syria

cropped-showcase4.jpgI think our world needs to wake up and smell the coffee
We are a world of people trying to kill each other off over religion, we have not learned from our past.
What are we to do about the problem?
The first remedy would be to realize we believe in a one God. Religion hurts us, believing in “The Heavenly Father does not.”
The land is the next problem, we all want what is not ours. The 10 commandments tell us not to covet what our neighbor has, This is in most belief systems, so why don’t we adhere to that commandment?

In the early hours Saturday morning, Israel and a Syrian-Iranian alliance became engaged in a confrontation that left an Israeli F16 destroyed, in addition to the downing of an Iranian-made drone, and numerous military targets within Syria destroyed.

While the shooting down of the Israeli fighter jet was an accomplishment widely touted by Israel’s enemies, the destruction of significant Syrian air defense systems appear to leave Syria and it’s Iranian backers in a much weaker position to defend against future Israeli air raids.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call, IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus provided a clear breakdown of the confrontation’s events. An Iranian ‘stealth’ drone, modeled on the American RQ-170 drone, took off from the T4 airbase in central Syria, located deep in the Syrian desert near Palmyra.

According to the IDF, this airbase has been taken over by the Iranian Quds Force-an elite overseas unit, used by Tehran to spread its dangerous influence across the Middle East.

The Quds Force has been highly active in Syria, helping the regime of embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad to defeat rebel forces. Iran has been working to build missile factories in Syria, to produce weapons able to target Israeli cities. The Quds Force uses the T4 airbase to launch Iranian-made drones.

Before sunrise on Saturday, Iran sent a drone south towards Syria’s border with Jordan. From its launch, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) was monitoring the drone’s flight path. IAF controllers watched as the drone entered Jordanian airspace, and then tried to sneakily enter Israeli airspace from Jordan–as opposed to from Syria–in an attempt to circumvent Israeli defenses.

The drone flew for a minute and a half over Israel, before an IAF Apache combat helicopter shot it out of the sky at 4:25 am. The IDF recovered the pieces and brought them back for analysis–providing an opportunity for Israel to study Iranian drone technology.

Next, the IAF tracked the location of the Iranian caravan where a crew was controlling the drone, hundreds of kilometers away from Israel in the central Syrian desert.

Just over an hour after the drone’s interception, at 5:34 am, eight Israeli jets took off on a mission to destroy the caravan, as well as additional Iranian military targets in Syria. Hovering over northern Israel, the jets fired long-range missiles, striking and destroying their targets.

Syrian forces, controlled by the Assad regime, then entered the confrontation firing between 15 and 20 surface to air missiles at the Israeli jets. One of the Israeli F16’s was unable to defend itself against the attack and was damaged in-flight, forcing the pilot and navigator to eject the aircraft, before the plane crashed down in northern Israel.

The pilot suffered serious injuries, and the navigator suffered light wounds. Following successful surgeries and blood transfusions, the pilot’s condition was upgraded from serious to moderate. Both are expected to make a recovery.

At 8:45am, Israel responded to the downed F16. The IAF scrambled the second wave of fighter jets into the air, and 12 targets across Syria were hit. Syrian forces again fired on Israeli jets, but none were hit.

During the reprisal, Israel destroyed eight Syrian air defense sites, destroying a significant portion of the Syrian regime’s air defense systems. Another four significant Iranian military targets were hit.

“We carried out a wide-scale attack on the aerial defense system: radars, missiles, batteries, and posts,” Amnon Ein Dar, head of the Training and Doctrine Division in the IAF said in a statement.

The number of casualties suffered by Syria or Iranian Quds forces remains unknown. Iran and Syria are attempting to play down the scope of damage that they sustained while celebrating the downing of the Israeli F16 as a major military accomplishment.

The IDF is investigating the incident to determine exactly why the F16 was unable to avoid enemy fire, leading to its crash.
